AFDD RCBO's

AFDD RCBO combines arc fault detection (series and parallel) caused by loose connections, incorrect wiring or rodent bites with detecting earth fault currents, overload or short circuit currents.

AFDD uses microprocessors to detect changes in the electrical waveform which could result in arcing, overheating and causing a fire while RCBO reduces the number of injuries caused by electric shock from earth leakage or over-current.

From March 2022, in accordance with the BS7671 18th Edition AMD2, AFDDs became a requirement in Higher Risk Residential Buildings, Houses in Multiple Occupation, Purpose-built Student Accommodations, and Care Homes. They should be installed at the beginning point of any single-phase AC final circuits that provide power to socket-outlets with a rated current that does not exceed 32A.

What is an RCBO with AFDD?

RCBO with AFDD is a single device, compactly designed to integrate a Residual Current Breaker with Over-Current (RCBO) for detecting earth leakage, residual current, and short circuits with an Arc Fault Detection Device (AFDD) that effectively identifies electrical arcing resulting from loose wires, rodent damage, or incorrect wiring. In any of those cases, AFDD RCBO will cut off the power supply to the affected circuit providing protection against electric shocks and effectively protecting from the potential risk of fires.

What does AFDD mean in electrical terms?

AFDD is an acronym for Arc Fault Detection Device. Arcs are observable plasma discharges resulting from the flow of electrical current through typically non-conductive substances like air. When electric current ionizes the gases present in the air, it generates extremely high temperatures, surpassing 6000 °C. Such temperatures are enough to initiate a fire. Arcing can be caused by worn electrical contacts, damage to wire insulation, loose connections or rodent bites. AFDDs use microprocessors to detect those changes in electrical waveform and will cut off power to the affected circuit.

Are AFDDs mandatory?

In general, no but from March 2022 as per BS7671 18th Edition Amendment 2, AFDDs became mandatory in specific types of buildings like Higher Risk Residential Buildings, Houses in Multiple Occupation, Purpose built accommodations for students and Care homes. According to Amendment 2, AFDDs must be fitted at the origin of any single-phase AC final circuits supplying socket outlets with a rated current not exceeding 32A.

Does AFDD have RCD protection?

AFDDs come in a few different configurations which will determine if they have RCD protection or not. Stand-alone AFDD attachment modules will not have RCD protection built-in and will have to be combined with another module for full protection. Very often AFDDs are combined with RCBOs which will have RCD protection built-in or with MCBs in which case they won’t provide RCD protection.
