RCBO FAQs

RCBO stands for Residual Current Breaker with Over-Current Protection. It is a circuit breaker which integrates the functionality of MCB and RCD in a single module. RCBOs detect residual current, overload, short circuit or earth leakage and cut off the power supply to the affected circuit-protecting from potential injuries from electric shock.

RCD - Residual Current Device - continuously monitors electrical current level and cuts off the power supply in case of current leakage providing protection from electrocution or electrical fires. In addition to RCD functions, RCBO detects overcurrent which could be in the form of overload when for example too many devices are used on one circuit or in the form of a short circuit when there is a connection between the live and neutral conductors.

MCB - Miniature Circuit Breaker - detects overcurrent in the form of overload or short circuit and cuts off the power supply to the affected circuit-protecting from electrocution or electric fires. RCBO not only can detect overcurrent (like MCB) but as well residual current or earth leakage which can’t be detected by MCB, therefore, providing additional protection from electric shocks.
