7kW EV Chargers

A 7kW EV charger is the standard for UK homes, workplaces and smaller commercial sites. It runs on a standard single-phase 32A circuit, which is available in virtually every UK property and delivers around 25–30 miles of range per hour. For most electric cars with a 50–80kWh battery, that means a full charge overnight or during a working day.

All chargers comply with the Smart Charge Points Regulations 2021, so they support off-peak scheduling out of the box — essential for making the most of time-of-use tariffs like Intelligent Octopus Go. Many models also support solar, allowing surplus generation from rooftop panels to be diverted to your car.

We stock 7kW wallboxes from ZappiOhme, Pod PointHypervoltEaseeWallbox, Indra and more — tethered and untethered, in a range of cable lengths and finishes.

7kW EV Charger FAQs

For the vast majority of EV drivers, yes. A 7kW charger adds around 25–30 miles of range per hour, which means a 60–80kWh battery charges fully in eight to ten hours — comfortably overnight or during a working day.

The only scenario where 7kW may feel limiting is if you regularly drive very high daily mileage (150+ miles) and need to recharge quickly during the day rather than overnight. In that case, a 22kW charger on a three-phase supply is worth considering — but three-phase supply is uncommon in UK homes.

Nothing meaningful — they refer to the same charger type. A 32A single-phase supply at 230V delivers 7.36kW, which manufacturers round either up to 7.4kW or down to 7kW.

You will see both figures used interchangeably in product listings. All units on this page output at 32A single-phase regardless of which figure appears in the name.

Almost all UK homes have a single-phase 100A supply, which is more than enough to run a 7kW (32A) charger alongside normal household loads.

Your installer will check your consumer unit has capacity for a dedicated 32A circuit — most modern boards do. If your supply is older or heavily loaded, a consumer unit upgrade may be recommended. Homes with a three-phase supply can also run a 7kW charger on one phase, though in that case it may be worth considering a 22kW unit instead.

Intelligent Octopus Go requires a charger that communicates directly with Octopus to schedule sessions automatically. Validated models include Ohme ePod, Hypervolt Home 3 Pro and Zappi.

Other smart chargers on this page can be scheduled manually to charge during off-peak windows but won't benefit from the fully automated Intelligent Octopus Go experience. See our Octopus-compatible chargers page for the full current list.

Yes, if you choose a solar-compatible model. The myenergi Zappi is the most widely used solar EV charger in the UK: it monitors your generation in real time and diverts any surplus above your household consumption to the car, so you're using energy that would otherwise be exported.

Hypervolt and Indra also offer solar integration modes on selected models. A standard smart charger without solar integration will charge at the scheduled time regardless of your generation output. See our solar-compatible EV chargers.

Yes — 7kW wallboxes are widely used in workplace car parks, particularly for all-day parking bays where a full shift provides enough time to charge most vehicles.

They are also eligible for the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS), which provides up to £500 per socket for businesses, charities and public authorities. For higher-turnover bays where vehicles park for two to four hours, a 22kW charger may be more appropriate. See our Workplace EV Chargers or Commercial EV Chargers pages.
