Untethered EV Chargers

An untethered EV charger — sometimes called a socketed charger — has a universal Type 2 socket on the unit rather than a permanently attached cable. You use your own Type 2-to-Type 2 cable to charge, which means no trailing lead on the wall when the bay is empty.

Available in 7kW single-phase and 22kW three-phase, untethered chargers suit shared bays and multi-vehicle households particularly well — multiple drivers can use the same charge point with their own cables. Popular brands include Zappi, Ohme, Pod Point, Easee and Sync Energy.

Untethered EV Charger FAQs

An untethered EV charger — also called a socketed charger — has a Type 2 socket on the unit rather than a fixed cable.

You charge using a separate Type 2-to-Type 2 cable, either the one supplied with your vehicle or a separately purchased lead. When not in use, the unit sits flush on the wall with no cable attached.

A tethered charger has a fixed built-in cable — convenient for a dedicated bay with a single vehicle, as you plug straight in without carrying a cable.

An untethered charger has a socket — you bring your own cable, which offers more flexibility for shared bays or multiple vehicle types and gives a neater appearance when not in use.

Most EVs are supplied with a Type 2-to-Type 2 cable, so you may already have one. However, manufacturer-supplied cables are often 4m to 5m, which can be shorter than ideal for home use depending on where your charger is mounted relative to your car's charge port.

If your vehicle's cable isn't long enough, or if you want a spare, browse our EV charging cables for Type 2 leads in lengths from 5m to 10m.

Yes — untethered chargers on this page are on the OZEV approved list and are eligible for the EV Chargepoint Grant (up to £500 per socket for renters, flat owners and landlords) and the Workplace Charging Scheme (up to £500 per socket for businesses, charities and public authorities from 1 April 2026).

Homeowners with a private driveway are not currently eligible for the residential grant.

A tethered charger is more convenient for a single dedicated vehicle, as the cable is always attached and ready to plug in. An untethered charger suits shared bays, multi-vehicle households, or anyone who prefers a neater wall unit when not in use.

The main practical consideration is cable storage — with an untethered charger, you'll need to keep your Type 2 cable in the car or nearby. Read our full tethered vs untethered guide for a detailed comparison to help you decide.

Yes — all modern electric vehicles sold in the UK and Europe use a Type 2 connector, so an untethered charger with a Type 2 socket is compatible with virtually every current EV and plug-in hybrid on the market.

Older vehicles occasionally use a Type 1 connector, but these are increasingly rare. If you drive an older import or are unsure, check your vehicle's charging port before purchasing. Browse our EV charging cables if you need a Type 2 lead to use with your new charger.
