Tethered EV Chargers

A tethered EV charger has a fixed cable permanently attached to the unit that you plug straight into your car without needing to carry or store a separate lead. It's the most convenient configuration for a dedicated home or workplace charge point where the same vehicle or vehicle type charges regularly and it's the most popular choice for domestic installations.

Tethered chargers are available in 7kW (single-phase) and 22kW (three-phase) output ratings, with cable lengths typically ranging from 5m to 8m. All use a Type 2 connector, which is the universal standard for AC charging across every EV sold in the UK and Europe. The cable is hardwired into the unit and cannot be swapped, so it's important to choose the right length before purchase.

Tethered EV Charger FAQs

A tethered EV charger has a fixed cable permanently attached to the unit, ending in a Type 2 connector that plugs directly into your vehicle. Unlike an untethered (socketed) charger, there is no separate cable to carry or store — you simply plug in when you arrive.

Tethered chargers are available in 7kW single-phase and 22kW three-phase output ratings, with cable lengths typically from 5m to 8m and many in the range are also Octopus compatible. 

A tethered charger has a fixed built-in cable; an untethered charger has a Type 2 socket and requires you to use a separate cable — either your vehicle's own cable or a separately purchased lead.

Tethered is more convenient for a dedicated bay with a single regular vehicle. Untethered is more flexible for shared bays, multiple vehicle types, or drivers who prefer a neater unit when not in use.

Measure from your planned wall-mount position to the furthest point your car's charge port will sit, allowing for parking angle and a comfortable amount of slack.

If in doubt, choose longer — excess cable can be managed with a tidy, but a short cable can't be extended.

No — the cable is hardwired into the unit and cannot be swapped or replaced without returning the unit for service or replacing the charger entirely.

Yes — tethered chargers on this page are on the OZEV approved list and are eligible for the EV Chargepoint Grant (up to £500 per socket for renters, flat owners and landlords) and the Workplace Charging Scheme (up to £500 per socket for businesses, charities and public authorities from 1 April 2026).

Homeowners with a private driveway are not currently eligible for the residential grant but can still purchase and install tethered units.
