If you're thinking about getting an EV charger installed at your home or rental property, you've probably wondered whether the government will help with the cost. The good news is that OZEV EV charger grants are still available in 2026 — and from 1 April 2026, the maximum amount you can get has increased to £500 per socket.
What is OZEV and Why Do These Grants Exist?
OZEV stands for the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles — the government body responsible for supporting the switch to electric cars. These grants exist to make installing a home or residential EV charger more affordable, helping more people to make the switch from petrol and diesel cars.
The grants don't give you cash directly. Instead, they reduce the cost of buying and installing a chargepoint, with the money taken off your installer's invoice.
As of 2026, the main schemes focus on people who face extra barriers — particularly those living in flats or renting — because they often can't install a charger as easily as someone with a driveway.
The EV Chargepoint Grant for Renters and Flat Owners
This is the main OZEV EV charger grant available for most people who don't own a traditional house with a driveway.
- People who rent any residential property
- People who own and live in a flat
- Households with only on-street parking
- Increased from £350 on 1 April 2026
- Off-street or allocated parking required
- Landlord's written permission needed if renting
Note: Homeowners with a private driveway are generally not eligible — the scheme for them ended in 2022.
How to apply
The process is now handled through the government's "Find a Grant" platform. You typically apply after choosing your charger but before installation is completed. Your OZEV-approved installer will then claim the grant and deduct it from your bill.
The Landlord EV Charger Grant
Landlords have their own version called the Residential Landlord Chargepoint Grant.
- Private landlords installing chargers at residential rental properties
- Chargers installed for tenants to use
- Claim for up to 200 sockets per year
- Across all properties in your portfolio
This makes it much more attractive for landlords to add EV charging as a desirable feature for tenants. The application process is similar to the renter/flat owner grant — via the government portal, using an OZEV-approved installer.
Note: A separate "infrastructure grant" for larger-scale cabling work across multiple parking spaces largely closed to new applications in March 2026.
Renters: What Support Is Available?
If you rent your home, you can still benefit from the electric vehicle charger grant for renters, but it's not always straightforward. Here's how to make it happen:
- Get your landlord on board Talk to your landlord and explain the landlord EV charger grant — many are happy to apply because it improves the property and they can claim up to £500 per socket.
- Get written permission You need permission from your landlord in writing, along with access to off-street or allocated parking.
- Apply yourself if needed If your landlord isn't interested, you can sometimes apply yourself with their written permission.
- Choose an approved installer Use an OZEV-approved installer who understands rental properties — they'll handle the grant claim and deduct it from your bill.
