Downlight Buyer’s Guide FAQs

Downlight Buyer’s Guide FAQs

When choosing LED downlights, one of the most common questions is whether to install integrated LED downlights or GU10 downlights. Both options are widely used in modern lighting installations and offer excellent energy efficiency, but they work slightly differently.

Integrated LED downlights have the LED light source built directly into the fitting. Because the LED and fitting are designed as one unit, they deliver excellent efficiency, slimmer profiles and longer lifespans. Modern integrated fittings can last up to 50,000 hours, making them a durable and low-maintenance lighting solution for homes and commercial spaces.

GU10 downlights, on the other hand, use a replaceable GU10 bulb installed inside a fire-rated or standard downlight housing. This gives installers and homeowners more flexibility, as the bulb can easily be replaced or upgraded without changing the entire fitting.

Both options offer reliable, energy-efficient lighting, but each has its advantages depending on the installation.

  • GU10 Downlights – Install a fire-rated downlight housing into the ceiling and fit a GU10 LED bulb of your choice. When the bulb reaches the end of its lifespan, it can be replaced easily without removing the fitting. This option provides flexibility and is popular with installers.
  • Integrated LED Downlights – These combine the LED and fitting into a single unit, allowing slimmer designs, wider beam angles and excellent energy efficiency. Many models can also be installed beneath insulation and exceed modern building regulation requirements such as Part L.

Correct spacing is essential to achieve smooth, even lighting. A commonly used guideline is to divide the ceiling height by two to estimate the distance between downlights.

For most residential rooms, installers typically space downlights around 1m–1.5m apart to create balanced illumination.

It is also recommended to keep downlights at least 0.6m away from walls. This prevents harsh shadows and helps create an even wash of light across the room.

The exact number of downlights required will depend on the room size, ceiling height and the purpose of the lighting.

  • General Lighting – Use evenly spaced fixed or CCT downlights to create uniform lighting throughout the room.
  • Task Lighting – Position brighter downlights above work areas such as kitchen worktops, desks or bathroom mirrors to improve visibility and reduce shadows.
  • Accent Lighting – Tiltable or adjustable downlights allow you to highlight artwork, architectural features or alcoves by directing the beam precisely where needed.

Colour temperature plays a major role in how a room looks and feels. Measured in Kelvin (K), it determines whether light appears warm and relaxing or bright and energising.

  • Warm White (2700K–3000K) – Ideal for living rooms, bedrooms and relaxation areas. Warm white creates a soft, comfortable glow similar to traditional halogen lighting and helps create a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Cool White (4000K) – A clean, neutral white light commonly used in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and utility rooms. It provides excellent clarity for everyday tasks.
  • Daylight (5000K–6500K) – A bright, crisp light designed to replicate natural daylight. Best suited for workshops, offices, studios or commercial spaces where visibility and colour accuracy are important.

Most LED downlights require an LED driver to regulate the electrical current supplied to the LED chip. This ensures stable operation and helps prevent flickering, overheating and premature failure.

However, the driver configuration depends on the type of downlight you choose.

  • Integrated LED Downlights – Most modern integrated fittings include a built-in or supplied LED driver, making installation quick and straightforward.
  • Dimmable LED Downlights – These require a compatible dimmable LED driver and a suitable dimmer switch (usually trailing-edge). Some fittings include the dimmable driver, while others require it to be purchased separately.

Fire-rated downlights are designed to maintain the fire integrity of a ceiling by sealing the hole cut into plasterboard during a fire. Required in most UK residential installations, they help prevent the spread of fire between floors and are commonly used in living areas, hallways and loft conversions.

The most widely used style, fixed downlights direct light straight downward to provide clean, uniform illumination. They are ideal for kitchens, bedrooms, hallways and offices where consistent lighting is required.

Adjustable or tiltable downlights allow you to angle the beam of light, making them perfect for highlighting walls, artwork, alcoves or architectural features. They are also ideal for sloped ceilings or accent lighting.

CCT (Colour Changing Temperature) downlights allow you to switch between multiple colour temperatures such as warm white, neutral white and cool white. This flexibility allows installers or homeowners to customise the ambience of a room during installation.

Dimmable LED downlights give you full control over brightness levels, helping create relaxing ambient lighting or bright task lighting depending on the room and time of day. They are commonly used in living rooms, dining areas and home cinemas.

IP65 rated downlights are designed for bathrooms, wet rooms and outdoor soffits where protection against moisture and steam is required. These fittings provide safe, reliable lighting in areas exposed to water splashes or humidity.

Integrated LED downlights combine the LED light source and fitting into a single compact unit. They offer excellent energy efficiency, long lifespans and a sleek appearance while often allowing installation directly beneath insulation.
